Michael T. Martin Scholarship

 

 

The Nevada Commission on Construction Education granted AGC Las Vegas $60,000 to partly fund its extensive training program. The grant will allow AGC to offer its widely praised courses for $50 per student – a 50-percent discount over current rates.

Descriptions:

Beginning Print Reading
Attend 8 – 3 hour classes on basic elements of print reading experience in residential construction. Course covers: working drawings and prints, working drawing concepts, trade math, symbols and abbreviations, plot plans, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, trade information, print reading. Content is applicable to a variety of building trades including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and HVAC.  Expanded coverage is provided in the areas of construction materials, alarm systems, and voice/data/video (VDV) systems.
                                                          

When:   January 14, 2008 – March 3, 2008
             Every Monday evening from 6 - 9:00 p.m.

The Estimating Process: Planning the Estimate
Overview of the Estimating Process: Emphasis on planning the estimate and improving the company’s estimating process; understand how planning and process improvement impacts company profitability; identify factors that affect estimates, purposes of preparing estimates; identify inputs to/outputs from estimates.  Explain the Business Process Model and the “Weak-Link” Paradox; explore alternative approaches to tools and aid estimate planning. Enumerate practical ways to improve company’s profitability by improving its estimating process.

Introduction to Construction
Attend 8 – consecutive 3 hour classes on Introduction to Construction.  Course covers the fundamentals of the construction processes and technological advances which have results in more cost-effective construction.  Topics include: City and regional planning, construction management, construction contracting, labor management relations, surveying and mapping, designing and engineering, construction materials, construction drawings & specifications. Estimating, bidding, scheduling, purchasing, construction equipment, foundations, structures and utilities.

When:   January 15, 2008 – March 4, 2008
            Every Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Supervisory Training Program’s (STP): Accident Prevention and Loss Control
Attend 10 – 2 hour classes on Accident Prevention and Loss Control.  Course covers the high price of accidents, safety communication and motivation, documentation and inventories, using reference material and advisory sources, project security and traffic control, using the project schedule to prevent losses, selecting methods and equipment to prevent losses, assignment of responsibility and equipment maintenance, common construction hazards, government regulations and inspections.

When:  January 16 – March 19, 2008
            Every Wednesday Evening from 6 - 8:00 p.m.

Introduction to MS Excel
This session is for novice Excel users in the construction industry. Content to cover cell pointer movement, splitting the sheet & locking rows/columns during scrolling, window stacking, formatting cells, basics of formulas (Sum, Average, Max, Min) insert/deleting columns/rows/sheets, headers/footers, sort data with columns; create most popular cell formats such as General, Number, Current, and Percent.

Time Management
There never seems to be enough TIME to get everything done!  This seminar will emphasize the relationship of “time management” and behavioral science” versus traditional time management tools or “gimmicks.”  Additionally, communication skill building will be covered including the areas of oral, written, electronic, and “body language” communications and the importance of personal marketing as it relates to time management.  This seminar will also review human “time barriers” and “time robbers” and will conclude with three (3) real life “time” case studies.

Storm Water Drain Compliance
Course will cover – State and Federal storm water regulations, what are the reasons for the regulations, local considerations, who needs to comply, how you get coverage by the General Storm Water Permit (NOI Notice of Intent), Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPP) highlights, What are BMPs and which ones are right for my project site, inspection and recordkeeping requirements, who are the enforcement agents?, State and local information sources, what to do during an enforcement action.

Beginning Project Management for the Construction Industry
This class is for anyone wanting to be able to implement the various specialist disciplines of project management.  Class will cover Overview of the Construction Industry; Project Lifecycle; Teamwork/Communication; Scope Control; Project Delivery Methods and Contracting; Risk and Liability; Estimating; Planning & Scheduling; Cost Control; Material & Equipment Management, Productivity/Quality.   Even experienced project managers and upper management have reported that they learned something new by attending this class.

Mechanic’s Lien
Learn how to prepare and perfect Mechanic’s Lien.  Learn when property is subject to mechanic’s lien and who is entitled to mechanic’s lien.  Learn recent laws.  Learn strategy for getting paid from a practicing mechanic’s lien attorney.  Learn the alternative for removing and defending against lien claims.

The Estimating Process: Tenant Improvement & Remodeling Estimating
This class is aimed at estimators, administrators, and other departments that interface with the estimating process. Class includes detailed discussion and exercises teaching how to understand and use RS Means’ detailed estimating data. This class is a regular favorite. Includes a copy of 2008 RS Means Building Construction Cost Data.

When:   February 5, 7, 12, 2008

Intermediate Excel Skills
This session is for intermediate Excel users in the construction industry. Prerequisites include knowledge and experience in all topics stated in the Introduction to Excel class (see Jan. 16th).  Only minimal amount of time will be spent on review of introductory/basic concepts.  Discussion topics include relative and absolute addressing/formulas.  Paste-Special variants, intermediate-level formulas, intermediate-level Excel functions.  Print Area, Range Names, string manipulation and associated functions. OSHA 10 Hour Course
This course presents an overview of the OSHA Act, Federal and State OSHA Standards, hazard communication standard, chemical safety, industrial hygiene, PPE, confined spaces, walking & working surfaces, scaffolds and ladders, fall protection, powered lifts and platforms, powered industrial trucks, basic hoisting and rigging, fire protection, welding safety and electrical safety.
